THE BRIEF
The Weird Kidz is an animated feature film centering on a group of misfits in the 1980s. The director requested an anthemic hard rock track reminiscent of iconic rock legends like Pat Benatar and Joan Jett to help establish the film's signature identity.
Tasked with serving up a main theme, the song needed to distill the core message of the entire movie into a single, cohesive track that could carry the film's identity. The song needed to feel authentic to the period while serving as an empowering anthem for the characters.
Musically and lyrically, it needed to celebrate individuality while delivering a sharp undercurrent of social criticism. A central idea of the movie is that being an outcast isn't a flaw to be fixed, it's a superpower. Instead of writing a typical song about fitting in, I wrote an anthem that actively rejects conformity and takes aim at the status quo.
*CREATIVE APPROACH AND SOUND DESIGN* To capture the spirit of mid-80s hard rock, the songwriting and production focused on a rebellious attitude through lyrics and classic rock instrumentation, and a strong melody delivered through higher-register vocals.
Driving guitar riffs and power chords to give the track a sharp, aggressive edge and stadium rock presence.
A strong, steady rhythm section to keep the energy moving forward.
A catchy, melodic vocal line delivered with a commanding rock attitude.
Production techniques like classic guitar tones and era-appropriate reverbs to fit the 1980s setting.
DELIVERABLES Mixed and mastered the track. Delivered complete stereo mixes along with stems to provide the production with options to weave around dialogue and sound effects.
RESULTS Created a memorable and empowering anthem that reinforces the heart of The Weird Kidz and celebrates those who break the mold. It feels like a rediscovered classic rather than a modern imitation. The song was utilized for
The flexible final primary package was ready for final theatrical dubbing. The song's use was extended from the closing credits alone to further use in a key final scene.
The film experienced a successful film festival run and was picked up for distribution by Antenna Releasing, with an expected theatrical tour in 2026.
